Medicine Rattle

40.jpg

This medicine rattle was formed from two halves of rawhide, which were wetted and filled with sand to shape it round.  As it dried, each side was incised to create shapes.  One side has the silhouette of a buffalo; the other a curved sky and rain.  When dry, the sand was poured out and beads inserted into the hollow handle which was then plugged.  A strip of weasel hides the sewing of the two halves.
